1. What type of car does The Driving School have?

The Driving School teaches in either a manual or automatic of your choice. Both cars are dual control.

2. Do I need any experience before booking a lesson?

No. Most of our customers have no experience the first time they come to us. We are happy to take you from the first time you turn the key to your full license. No matter how much experience you have (or don’t have), when it comes to driving we are able to teach you. At The Driving School we believe that receiving professional tuition is the best option possible so you don’t pick up other people’s bad habits.

3. Is it better to learn automatic or manual?

It’s entirely up to you whether you choose to learn automatic or manual; we are happy to teach whichever you wish to learn. Automatic requires less coordination than manual. Note that if you sit your restricted test in an automatic you will only be able to drive an automatic car (unless you are actively supervised by another person who has had their full license for two years).

4. How many lessons will I need?

That depends largely on the amount of previous driving experience you’ve had, along with a raft of other considerations. It can depend on how often you drive outside of lesson time, your own self confidence, as well as your natural ability – really it’s entirely up to you. It is recommended by the NZTA that you receive a 120 hours of practical experience, however in practice that is rarely the case as most people learn in a lot less time.

5. Can I use my own car?

Yes you may, but we prefer to start first time manual drivers in our own car with the help of the dual controls.

6. What if I have to cancel a lesson?

We require a minimum of 12 hours notice before the lesson is due or we may have to charge you for the lesson time.

7. Do you offer refresher lessons?

Yes we do. We think it’s important that people feel confident on the road. The lesson plan is similar to what we teach learner drivers, so if you feel you need a few refresher lessons we are happy to help.

8. What if I am a mature person who would like to learn to drive?

The Driving School is happy to teach more mature citizens to drive as we believe that driving is an everyday freedom that everybody should be able to enjoy. While we accept that it may appear to be a little daunting at first, learning to drive can give you new independence at any age
